The sad thing is that I can't tell if you're taking the piss or not.

And yes, I do know who 3 of the Stigs are.

ONE Stig is Ben Collins. The one in the photograph is Ben.

There are several Stigs. I know three of them.

The idea is that Top Gear have access to several racing drivers from all sorts of series who will drive a particular car to its limits. Some of the drivers used are from series that the average Top Gear viewer has never heard of. All have a similar build and can be interchanged randomly.

The most ridiculous suggestion as to who the Stig is came from someone who posted on the blog attached to the Autotrader article. There is no way on God's good earth that the Stig is Justin Wilson! <roflmao>

The Stig's not tall enough to be Justin Wilson, surely? <think>

not only that, but Justin is a F1 Driver, and they are notorious for not being allowed to do this sort of thing.

Ok, as far as I know, the Stigs have been...

Ben Collins
Syd Herbert
The guy who owned the Maserati
Olivier Panis*
Heikki Kovalinen*
Nick Mason
Perry McCarthney

*These two drove the Toyota and Renault F1 cars, respectively. Panis can be spotted because he did not wear the Simpson helmet, prefering to use his Arai.

Hang on a cotton picking moment... are you saying that 'The STIG' is a mythical figure portrayed by more than one person... <yikes>

Next you'll be saying that there is no Father Christmas.... <doh>

There was also rumour of some snow stunt guy being The STIG for the Olympic snowmobile stunt?

The STIG - February 26, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
Ah, didn't count the non driving Stigs, of which there are loads. if the Stig needs to do something special they'll bring another guy in. Similarly if he doesn't need to drive/do things other than drive, it's more than likely an actor rather than a driver.

Red Andy - February 26, 2008 11:35 PM (GMT)
Kev, you'll know this: how many Stigs drove at the Britcar 24 hours? I know it was more than one, but can't remember quite how many.

In the actual race - 1.

There were 2 others there though, The aforementioned Syd Herbert did some practising and we're not sure about the mysterious JP.

And I doubt strongly that stands for Jonathan Palmer.
