The world's first Formula One night race in Singapore will be a feast of hi-tech gadgetry, organisers say, featuring electronic flags and with around 1,500 lighting projectors illuminating the city.
The September 28 night race will see the introduction of electronic flag displays to replace those traditionally waved by race officials, Valerio Maioli, the race's lighting designer, told Reuters in an interview.
The new system will use electronic boards along the track to display the different flag colours.
"It is a more centralised system and I think it makes it more efficient," Maioli said.LinkAre they trying to do too much in one go, first night race AND the introduction of electronic flags? I understand that it might be the best solution to make sure the flagged signals are visible at night, but some of the marshals on this board have already suggested there might be drawbacks to this system. I know they have done some tests in Barcelona, but a test is never the same as race conditions. I guess I'd feel a bit happier if they ran a couple of daytime races under electronic flags first before using them at the night race.
