Title: Greetings from Arkansas

Nomad - March 1, 2007 12:31 AM (GMT)
The cranky old man from SW Arkansas is back again. Sorry I have been a bit remiss in re-introducing myself but things have been a bit hectic lately. I'm still a Chief Steward for Club Racing and building race bikes (a couple will be racing at Daytona next week).

I'll try not to pull the Saint's chain too often.

The Nomad

Howdy Cranky. I'm in SE Louisiana, so I'm in your time zone. Tell us about the bikes.

Maybe he's just in on the joke.

Hey Nomad, I was happy to see your name again.

Looking forward to hopefully hearing some more of your racing anecdotes, and more on the Daytona scoop...

Welcome to TPL <waves>

Nomad - March 2, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Thanks Tazio and all. I'm not going to Daytona this year since I have picked up a nasty Staph infection in my left foot. Injections and daily visits to my doctor have me a bit tied down. The racing started yesterday at Roebling Road outside of Savannah, Georgia, and they will tech Sunday at Daytona, then race Monday and Tuesday. I haven't been able to contact my buddy because of the Tornadoes and general weather nastiness but I'm sure the BSA's performed well. More when I hear from Daytona.

Flood, let me know when you are coming up this way and we'll meet. The Ducks are still running and the lake is beautiful now. Glad you liked Hot Springs. some magazine survey just named it the most desirable place to retire in the USA.

Saint, just because you are easy!!!

The Nomad

Big yawn there bud.
Nice way to join a forum.

John - March 2, 2007 04:13 PM (GMT)
Do you know each other from another forum.....?

Of course not eveyone keeps the same handle from forum to forum but he seems to know you or thinks he does... <think>

The Saint - March 2, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
I seem to recall Nomad from the BBC, but not much else other than he's from Arkansas.

Seems rather odd to join a forum and immediately look for a fight with someone.

John - March 2, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
True... a little explaining is in order.... the BBC members are all a blur to me now... it's over 3 months now since the demise of Five Live...

But when making a joke about dumb people in American, Arkansas is and Alabama are always the states people use. That is something I picked up from living here.
I lived in Arkansas for a while myself, and loved the place – my house was awesome and somewhat palatial by UK standards, it was the bible bashers I hated there.
But anyway, that post was made before he joined, and it was a joke.
And like I said, it’s an odd way to joint a forum – Saying hello and within a couple of posts trying to needle someone. I suggest people leave their old BBC prejudices at home when they post here, I have.

I refered to myself as thick, and you were just being friendly with the Arkansas thing. I didn't take offense (offence). People take themselves too seriously. I think Nomad was just being friendly too.

1. characteristic of or befitting a friend; showing friendship: a friendly greeting.
2. like a friend; kind; helpful: a little friendly advice.
3. favorably disposed; inclined to approve, help, or support: a friendly bank.
4. not hostile or at variance; amicable: a friendly warship; friendly natives.

–noun
7. a person who is in sympathetic relationship to oneself or one's side; one who shows no hostility.
________________________________________
[Origin: bef. 900; ME frendly, OE fréondlîc. See FRIEND, -LY ]

—Related forms
friend•li•ness, noun

—Synonyms 1. companionable, neighborly. 2. kindly, amiable, cordial, genial, affectionate, kind-hearted. 3. benevolent, well-disposed, helpful, favorable; advantageous, propitious.
—Antonyms 3. antagonistic.

I see nothing in the words “I’ll try not to yank The Saints chains” or “because you are too easy” that could fit the above description other than if you note the antonym at the bottom which is ANTAGONISTIC.And like I say, I find it strange that a person joins a forum, says hello and then becomes immediately ANTAGONISTIC to one of its members without any form of dialogue between the two.

OK, I stand corrected. Neither of you were being friendly.

Flood mate, I wasn’t being friendly or hostile, I was enquiring as to why the guy felt the need to be antagonistic from the onset?

I'm just being a jerk, Saint. I'll quit stirring the pot. No value there.

Hey, glad the storms missed you (Kansas) and Rob (Bama). They have been kicking a**. Keep your head down.

The Saint - March 2, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
Good idea, change the subject, the previous one was a real ‘whatever’

Well I lost my electricity last Sunday due to a storm that we had, and I missed the bloody NASCAR race live. Though watching the highlights later, I saw that I missed nothing!
Though when I watched the news yesterday I thought about Rob, he’s the only person I know who lives in Aleebamee!

theghostofnuvolari - March 2, 2007 09:57 PM (GMT)
aah, the irony of it all :D

The Saint - March 3, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
what irony?

Nomad - March 3, 2007 03:07 PM (GMT)
Actually, I wrote in good humor. It seemed to me that mentioning Arkansas within earshot of the Saint was like waving a red flag at a bull. Previous remarks that the roads are lousy, the men are stupid red-necks, the women are fat, ugly, and toothless, and the state essentially a cultural wasteland; seemed to indicate a certain antipathy toward all things Arkansan. I didn't really expect the fury of his response and I'm sorry if I upset the cheerful nature of this board.

The Saint - March 3, 2007 03:27 PM (GMT)
No fury, i was questioning why the antagonosm.

Any comments on BBC about Arkansas were in jest.

In truth there were many things i liked abou the state, but the bible bashers drove me crazy.

So what do you think about Huckeby and his presidential run?

Nomad - March 9, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
Flood, about the bikes!!! It can be summed up by "We had problems". At Roebling, the B bike broke a rod and it was out of commission for the duration. A new set of racing rods has been ordered. I was a bit worried since BSA's don't have the strongest bottom ends at high RPM's. The A bike was a different story; it showed excellent speed and great torque off the corners. Day one at Daytona the weight of the carburetors and the great centifrigal force of the banking caused the rubber manifolds to bend sufficiently to loosen the carbs and allow air to enter, and on day two, the clutch nut loosened enough to cause dramatic slip. Monday a reinforcing bracket will be fabricated for the carbs and a fix will be found for the clutch nut. All this is normal teething problems that may not have appeared anywhere other than the high banks of Daytona. Since we are not running for the championships, we won't be going to the next race. It is about a month and a half until the following race and we will be ready. It is only about an hour from our shop but I will have to fly 1800 miles one way. We did gain some good points with our other racer, a Honda.

Saint, I have great respect for Mike Huckabee and think he would be a better president than we have had for a while but I don't think he has a snowball's chance of getting the nomination. I don't think the party is ready to nominate an active Baptist minister with liberal tendencies who has raised taxes. Never mind that the taxes paid for great improvement in state education and health care. The ultra conservative wing of the Republican party has too much influence. Does that answer the question?

Nomad, Thanks for the bike details. I've never had any experience with bikes, but I love the tech stuff. Next time you post bike info, start a new thread so that we won't be tied to the old bulls**t. Know what I mean?

I'm interested in the "how that happened" of a mechanical problem and the ideas about what to do about it. Then, what did you actually do, and what were the results of the fix, i.e. did the carb bracket work?

Know what I mean?

Boring stuff to most folks, but I like fixit stuff, and I don't care too much for where the other guys landed.

How can we make this machine better than it was. Not, how can I make it like the others.
