Title: Design-a-Track
Description: Let's create a 'Street' Season

GeordieWomble - April 5, 2007 01:51 PM (GMT)
Hi, all - this was something that was discussed on the 'previous' forum, and I thought it'd be fun to recreate it here.

This is the idea - using your skill, knowledge (and art skills), can you design a Street Circuit for your area, so that we could construct a TOTALLY street-based British racing season?

The only provisos are that:
You need to use existing roads only (so you can't 'add' bits),
the circuit would need to be a reasonable length (2 - 3 miles)
and you could set it up with only minimal rebuilding/resurfacing

Are you up to it?
Let's get a 20-race calendar!

The STIG - April 5, 2007 02:12 PM (GMT)
A couple of points.

What kind of racing is this for - 2-3 miles is longer than most of the permament circuits in the UK, and far too long for something like 7s.

And can we modify an existing circuit (i.e. not nessasarily a street circuit)?

OK - maybe 2-3 miles is a bit long (and many cities may not have the roads for that: make it enough for a lap of at least 1min 15secs (think the Birmingham Circuit)

As for modifying an existing track - in what way? As long as you don't chop down half the trees at Brand's, it could be interesting.

Here's a modified version of Llandow...

That's sort of what I meant.

By my reckoning this is about 2.3 miles long. Do you want a description?

The STIG - April 6, 2007 05:45 PM (GMT)
Think you've stretched it a bit too far mate, adjust the height and it'll be fine. Incidentally, Message to all participants, the 800x600 rule still applies.

It's sunderland yesno?

safc_fan89 - April 6, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
No, that's Sedgefield. It's a quietish village so blocking off the roads wouldn't be a problem :) It's a bit distorted but it will do I think. The map doesn't do it justice, there are largeish areas of elevation changes.

<think> That'll go down well then <whistle> :D

safc_fan89 - April 6, 2007 07:08 PM (GMT)
Yeah, annoy all the old people :D :D :D :D :D

Lord Tau - April 6, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
How about a race, one lap, around the M25....

safc_fan89 - April 6, 2007 07:14 PM (GMT)
And to make it even better, do not close the roads.

The STIG - April 6, 2007 08:09 PM (GMT)
Sedgefeild?

That's where the prime minister is from is it not?

safc_fan89 - April 6, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
Well, his constituency yes. I live there/here.

GeordieWomble - April 6, 2007 09:48 PM (GMT)
Think I'll have to dust down and re-post the Newcastle City Track - how does a 70-foot gradient change sound?

user posted image

And here it is - the drop comes after crossing the Tyne Bridge - the double left takes you down to the river, while the other side has a 1 in 4-ish climb (not good after a few drinkies - why is gravity always heavier on a Saturday Night?)

The blue bit is the 'Club Circuit', missing out Haymarket and John Dalton Street.

If you want to do it clearer, do what I did:

Copy the maps from Multimap onto an Excel Spreadsheet, then do your arty bit.
Copy the map into 'Microsoft' Paint, and save it as a JPEG.
Copy the file into Imageshack and set it to 'resize for message boards' or even '15 inch monitor' and hey presto!

Then your lovely home will so shown in all its glory.... <clap>

I see, Mr. Stig - take a circuit that is, maybe, not suitably challenging for someone of your almost unique abilities and make it more like the sort of place where you can happilly (or is it callously?) destroy expensive bits of machinery for our pleasure? And, as a by-product, give us a new, fun track?

And is it true your skin is fire-retardent?

Mmm Across the tyne bridge and then back across the swing bridge?

Anyway, wouldn't the start finish line be better on a section of the club circuit, that way you wouldn't have to have 2.

Errr... I seem to have been mis interpreted here. let me try again...

The big problem about Llandow is that ... The Two big problems with Llandow is th...

<grrr>

The 3 main problems with Llandow is that it's short, pretty much an oval and in the middle of nowhere. it also hasn't got much in the way of facilities oh damn.

Joking aside, what I've done here is taken extended it from a one mile long track up to a 1.5 miles (just) long circuit. The layout is designed to not only encourage high speeds on the long(ish) straights, but also handling in the tighter infeild area. Plus there's possibilities of adding a rally cross circuit into the plan.

The paddock is now on the infeild and is bigger. there's a proper pit lane, and that's it. really.

this isn't to say it isn't a challenging circuit - every circuit is, in it's own way. I haven't actually Driven Llandow so I can't really say about the intracate difficulties - but I do know that several nasty accidents have happened at the 2nd corner (the red chicane).

And my skin is made from a material called Proban - which is flame retadant.

Sounds too technical for me :D roflmao I'll leave it as it is.

Bringing Newcastle to a standstill would be good :)

Could I just point out a couple of things... you may have heard about this from clicking the link in the top left hand corner marked "welcome to the pit lane" but it would be greatly appreciated if you could not post copyrighted material here (unless you link it to where it came from) and also kept pics to a reasonable size, say 800x600?

I'll edit my first post to suit that*

Just stand on the north side of the Tyne Bridge after 5pm, happens every day!

The start's on St. James Boulevard because it's the longest straight on the course and, being a duel carridgeway, you can use the other side for the pits.

I've actually missed a little bit off for the 'Club Circuit', a right turn before the Tyne Bridge, so you head straight back towards Central Station (though that still gives you a frightening 40 foot 'down-and-up' immediately you turn)

added features are glass bottles being thrown at the drivers throughout the race and guest appearences by local boy racers in their suped-up Escorts or Astras.
