Title: Pau GP Historique !
Description: Not UK but it'll have to do
theghostofnuvolari - May 14, 2007 09:23 PM (GMT)
Just realised I'll be 15 miles from Pau over their GP weekend. I'll definitely be there <yahoo>
http://www.grandprixhistorique.com/17_edit...edition2007.htmAnyone going, want a report, photos ?
And in the mean time shouldn't we have a historic racing section somewhere ??
someone - May 15, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
Report, yes, photos, yes ;)
Indeed it's something that can be looked at, but at the moment there's not too much historic traffic...
gillesno27 - May 15, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
I'm so envious! I adore historic racing but was told there wasn't enough interest to warrant a section to itself. I think we're off to Monaco Historique next year for my 25th birthday...I'm so excited!
Give us the low-down on Pau dude!
theghostofnuvolari - May 15, 2007 06:52 PM (GMT)
cool, i'll take some cool snaps and update afterwards.
can't wait ! <yahoo>

Wouldn't mind seeing an Historic forum myself <thumbsup>
I like viewing,possibly sharing Historic pics/video clips,etc and I'm not getting any younger either <wheelchair> :D
Perhaps if one was set up,then the traffic might flow through <think>
gillesno27 - May 15, 2007 11:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah dude, I'd be 100% up for an historic forum. I go to quite a few meetings but never get chance to chat to ppl about it! My dad quickly gets bored of me telling him who's running what in the Derek Bell Trophy haha!

I'll put some sort of report on about my Goodwood trip in June. We just need to decide where these things belong.

Gilles / Grandslammer - it's currently under discussion <thumbsup>

They say a picture paints a thousand words, and what a mercy that is... I shall keep it brief.
I have spent the last couple of days in Pau watching the historics. Pau is a beautiful city, it's old centre contains a parade of hotels and casino that face south across a park and to the Pyrannees on the horizon. It would be difficult to imagine a more picturesque place to race...
Not knowing what to expect I travelled down with my dad hoping that we might see at least one Cobra and the odd Cooper, but the quality of the race cars that were driven in anger over the weekend was outstanding. OK this was not Goodwood, but that also meant feeling more part of a club of like-minded friends, with easy access to the cars and drivers, grandstand seats for 30 euros for the whole weekend, and maybe a few hundred spectators.
Saturday rained, but Sunday sunned, here is a sample of some of the machinery, with no apologies for the quality of the photography...!
Anglo Cobra and Mustang, Cobra managed 2nd on the grid for the 1hour in the pouring rain, respect to the Bryants for driving it like they stole it !

Very nice, very quick 356

Dazzling beautiful and rare Alfa TZ2

Astonishing Jaguar engined Lister Monzapolis, winner of the pre '61 GP race

Sublime Ferrari, I'm going to say 375 though that's not what the programme said. The exhaust note made your heart race, think Ferrari 360 on acid.

Just before the Formula Junior race, lovely cars, crappy weather.

It was a toss-up who got their car the most sideways, but this 1928 Alfa Romeo Tipo B straight 8 gets an award for crowd appeal, everyone ooh-ing and ahh-ing every time Matt Grist opposite locked past us on his way to third in a race of pre-61's...

Did I mention a race of F5000`s. LOUD ? DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT LOUD !! Race won by one of Peter Gethin's old cars.

Sigh!

A Porker doing its thing

Where's John ? A very nice Batmobile singing in the rain.

That Cobra being bravely chased by the Lotus 11 that snagged pole in the wet, and finished a strong 2nd in the dry race. The Cobra outdid everyone for sideways all weekend. Ballsey drive greatly enjoyed by the enthusiastic crowd.

That is one of the 5 existing Cobra Daytona Coupes, value over $4 million, my own personal favourite and a dream fulfilled watching it being driven in anger. It managed 3rd in the 1hour GT race, and the driver made it look effortless.

That'd be the Ferrari 250 swb about to blatt past an errant MG, the mellifluous sound of the V12 highlighting it's glorious pedigree as if the stunningly beautiful berlinetta bodywork wasn't enough.

And so that's it, a parting shot of a pre '66 Cooper Bobtail running through the streets of Pau.

I have few dozen of other photos, but these are the nicest, no space for the Mclaren F1 in the car park, the Elan's, Healey's, A110's... though I've also a few very short videos that I'll try and do something with.
It's difficult to get across the emotion of an event, but we found ourselves in very convivial surroundings, helping one guy get his Cooper Climax on axle stands, talking to another about his Bristol motored entry, enquiring about the Aston Martin GP car, and enjoying racing from another era, devoid of sponsorship, aggression free racing, applause for everyone who made an effort, cars that slid, drivers sawing at the wheel while all four tyres scrabbled for grip, and above it all the sound of incredible race engines making a real noise !
A fantastic weekend.

Beautiful Pictures - but could you make them a little smaller please? 800x600 would do.
Remind me to put up some of the pics from GPLive...

Photoshop...
or Ifran viewer. Try that. it's free.
and if you're still having problems, upload them to image shack and it will resize them for you if you ask it. it's unreliable though.
and if you're still having problems, e-mail them to me, and I'll do it for you.

Absolutely awesome dude! Looks like an amazing weekend! There were a few familiar cars there. The Bryant's Cobra is a very quick example. I remember seeing young Ollie toe to the floor but on full opposite lock headin down the Craner Curves at Dnington last year - made the hairs on te back of my neck stand on end! So delighted you enjoyed it, thanks for sharing the photos!

hey gilles, glad you liked the pictures, it was a great weekend, lots of great memories. already made a mental note to do the same next year.
stig, i'll do what i can, but i am rushed at the mo' (leaving france tomorrow am).

Yeah it looks brilliant dude! I will definitely be trying to get to the Monaco Historique next year to get more of the same! Incidentally, is that an Alfa TZ1 or a TZ2. I thought it was a TZ1 as the 2 was lower, wider and with sidewinder exhausts...does that ring a bell? Maybe I've got my wires crossed...!
