Title: 7 Spectators dead at Drag Race Show

wickedwitch - June 17, 2007 07:21 PM (GMT)
Selmer, Tennessee were holding a Drag Race show on Saturday on a closed highway. One car went out of control and ploughed into the crowd, who appeared to be very close to the track, protected only by a bit of armco.

Seven spectators have been killed and many more (including children) have been injured. The driver of the car has been taken to hospital. His condition is not known at this time.

The said thing is this event takes place every year to raise money for local childrens charities.

Oh my goodness, that's tragic... after the TT as well it brings it home just how dangerous motorsport is to watch live.

Sorry, but who on earth would be so stupid as to organise a drag racing show along a stretch of road that's not even got barriers along the whole length? Not suggesting that this is not a tragic event, but it sounds like it was so, so avoidable! I think the organisers should be tried for corporate manslaugher....

it does seem a little crazy they allowed this to happen

I see the police appear to have found the back of the car useful for putting their unwanted cups on. I've heard of tea-tray wings, but that takes the biscuit...!

Fox News are reporting that charges may be brought, but against whom, and for what, they don't say.

This tragedy happened about 5 weeks ago at a charity event, "Cars for Kids." The parade through town ended with the last car, a Funny Car style drag racer, doing a burnout. The car went a couple of hundred feet, lost control, and hit fans unproteted by armco. A local newspaper reported this:

QUOTE
NASHVILLE, Tenn. —  The group that sponsored a parade where a drag racer spun out of control and killed six people never registered as a charity in any of the states where it operated and hasn't filed required Internal Revenue Service paperwork since 2002.

The fatal crash happened last month in Selmer, a small town 80 miles east of Memphis, at a car show sponsored by Cars for Kids, which Larry Price founded in 1990 to raise money for children's charities.

Cars for Kids has already staged car shows in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana this year, and still plans shows in Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri, according to its Web site, but it has never been properly registered as a charity in any of those states, according to a review by The Associated Press.

I know British health and safety laws are a bit OTT but in this case they may have prevented a tragedy. It is always sad when a serious accident happens at a public event, especially when many of the spectators are children.
