Title: A New circuit - in Cornwall!
The STIG - June 28, 2007 10:10 AM (GMT)
Autosport magazine are reporting that BTCC driver, John George, is planning to turn an Airfield in Perranporth into the latest British circuit. Apparently, he's looking to produce a silverstone style layout using the perimiter road and some of the runways - Potentially having a 3.1 mile long circuit!
So what do you lot think. Does Cornwall need a circuit?
Startline Ed - June 28, 2007 10:10 AM (GMT)
More importantly, does Cornwall want a circuit?
Norbert - June 28, 2007 11:14 AM (GMT)
Cornwall doesn't even want England, let alone a racetrack!
<roflmao>

Doesn't this country have enough circuits?

Here's the current list of UK racing circuits - courtesy of e-tracks
1Anglesey
2Brands Hatch
3Cadwell Park
4Castle Combe
5Croft
6Donington Park
7Kirkistown
8Knockhill
9Lydden
10Mallory Park
11Oulton Park
12Pembrey
13Rockingham
14Silverstone
15Snetterton
16Thruxton
(Llandow, Goodwood, Aintree, and certain others removed due to not being active, only used for sprints, or on a temporary racing licence)
The other thing to look at, is each one's geographic location. The furthest east is Lydden, The Futhest South is ... Also Lydden, The Futhest north is Knockhill, and the futhest west is Kirkistown. Which is so far west it isn't even on the mainland! As far as the southwest is concerned, the nearest 2 circuits are Castle Combe and Thruxton. and that's it. Most circuits tend to be clustered around the midlands area - for example, Silverstone, Donington, Mallory, and Rockingham are all roughly in the same area.
The more circuits we have - the more chance to further diversify UK motorsport. More venues will mean more choice for spectators, and a circuit in cornwall could well open the sport up to a whole new set of fans. It would also give another independant circuit against BARC and MSV's 8. (that is, Pembrey, Thruxton, Mallory, and Croft for BARC, and Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Cadwell Park, and Snetterton for MSV).

Shame the facilities are normally a caraven and a leaky portaloo though....
<roflmao>
The STIG - June 28, 2007 02:07 PM (GMT)
And how many of the 16 circuits have you been to then Norbert? You appear to be way out of touch with the current state of UK motorsport and it's circuits.

Nowhere needs a 'Silverstone style' circuit!
Grandslammer - June 28, 2007 10:11 PM (GMT)
Quite like the 'Silverstone' style <thumbsup>

was refering to the multi layout approach Dave.
if it could go ahead, would be great. Could be a silverstone/Thruxton/Anglesey hybrid style.
Speedworx - June 28, 2007 11:06 PM (GMT)
Could be really interesting development.
Nearest tracks to Newquay = Castle Combe and Brands. Both of which are not really worth travelling 3+hrs for.
The best UK tracks are WAY away from Cornwall. They need a track down there.

Think you'll find that Thruxton and even Pembrey might be closer than Brands <thumbsup>
...and Castle Combe is worth travelling any distance (imo) <dance> <peek>
The STIG - June 30, 2007 08:54 AM (GMT)
The nearest circuits to Newquay are indeed, Thruxton and Castle combe. And Goodwood, technically.

What about it ?
The STIG - June 30, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
Pembrey as the crow flies isn't that far away either. But not many people can afford to fly from place to place...
Norbert - June 30, 2007 09:16 PM (GMT)

I don't see why hotels or in fact, being F1 Standard matters?
Take a look at Anglesey. millions spent on it recently, and still isn't anywhere near F1 standards. yet it's one of the most popular circuits in the country.

How can people have not heard of Cornwall? Great place for holidays, pasties and ice-cream - not that I'm generalising or anything. I'm off to Coverack myself in a couple of weeks with some friends for a holiday!
As for a race circuit in Cornwall, anything that encourages motorsport in the UK can't be a bad thing. Jonathan Palmer has done a great job with the circuits he owns, so if we can get a few more like him in on the act, building a few more circuits and upgrading the ones we have, maybe club and national level motorsport can really start drawing in the crowds again.

Isn't Cornwall famous for clots....?
