Title: They are at it again...

John - July 12, 2007 02:54 PM (GMT)
Autosport Magazine <doh>

OK I know it is UK based but it does have readership around the world and covers most forms of motorsport... It should be impartial when ever possible..

I appreciate the Green Banners for special UK sporting achievement like Andy Priaulx winning his 3 title, or Bentley winning Le Mans, but to go green for Buttons win last year and Hamilton's win in Canada was stretching the point a bit.

Yet it persist in ignoring the achievements of others on the cover... take these two...

Kimi wins first race of season, Hamilton on podium... who gets front cover.... Hamilton

Then last week... Kimi wins 3rd race of season... Hamilton limps home in 3rd... who is on the cover.... Hamilton.

If they can't get the cover right what hope for the commentary inside... <think>

Red Andy - July 12, 2007 02:58 PM (GMT)
I agree that handing out green banners for Jenson and Lewis winning races devalues them somewhat .... it used to be the case that they would only be used for significant British achievement, like world championships, but now they seem to be using them every time a Brit wins a GP. Is that a poor reflection on the standards of the magazine, or the standards of Britain in top-level international motorsport?

John - July 12, 2007 03:09 PM (GMT)
I think it is a good tradition as well...

I did like the Blue banner for Dario's win in this years Indy 500... nice touch that, I think Dan got a Green one for his 500 win last year.

dcoulthard19 - July 12, 2007 03:12 PM (GMT)
Hamilton got a green cover for his first GP win but he didn't get a green cover for his Indy win so I don't think they do it for every Brit victory.

They could do a black one when James Allen announces he's renewed his contract with ITV....

No... not for every win.. but even for just their first win is silly... if and when they wins a WDC then fine... then it means something...

I do not recall Coulthard or Hill getting green banners for their first win... Hill should have gotten one for the 1996 WDC

I think two in a row would have been too much even for the (rapidly descending) standards of Autosprout!

Autosport is not impartial at all, they just go on and on about Hamilton. If we wanted that we would watch ITV.

I agree that celebrating any race win by a Brit seems odd, almost a desperate move. Besides, the media only make such a fuss over Hamilton because we are an embarrassment as a sporting nation. Why else do we hype up Henman and the England football team?

I think that is a bit harsh on Autosport, I find it to be a decent mag with a good variety of F1 related arcticles on the different drivers and teams.

What are they ment to do? Just ban their writers from doing Hamilton arcticles. A very hard thing to do when he is a rookie who has 9 podiums, 2 wins and is leading the championship by a 2 digit number.

And I am never one to say no to a one pound off voucher <roflmao>

I don't think there is much wrong with a British magazine celebrating British success from time to time.

Red Andy - July 12, 2007 06:27 PM (GMT)
"From time to time" being the key phrase there. There's nothing wrong with celebrating British success - for example, Dario winning the Indy 500 or Andy Priaulx winning the WTCC championship again - but to bring out the green banners when a Brit wins their first F1 race is a bit pathetic, in my view. In some ways it was more justifiable for Jenson because of the circumstances in which it happened, and the fact that we'd all been waiting for so long, but for Hamilton it was evident right from the start that the Canada win was going to be the first of many. So why not save the green banner until he takes a WDC? By most accounts it's only going to be a year or two, if that....

John - July 12, 2007 07:52 PM (GMT)
I have to say I do like the magazine... and 90% of it's content... I have no problem with it being British nor being biased in that direction... i have bought nearly every weeks issue since 1990, and have kept every Schumacher win.

It is only the practice of not putting the winner on the cover as this week... and the inappropriate (IMO) use of the special banners.

ppparkinson9 - July 13, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
Autosport and British racing magazines in general are struggling with declining circulations. Sticking Hamilton on the cover boosts sales. It is a generally fair magazine with good writing, and it isn't all Hamilton Hamilton Hamilton inside, though of course there is some of it.

As for the banners since I started reading in 1994 they've done the Blue and Green banner for Coulthard, Herbert, Button and Hamilton. It's not something they started doing when Jenson won.

They also gave Richard Burns one for his first WRC win, so I assume McRae got one too.

The rules haven't changed as far as I can make out. If theres a lot of British success at once there's going to be a lot of Green and Blue banners.

John - July 13, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
And if there is a Welsh motorstport win or champion... they can do a RED banner....

<peek>

ppparkinson9 - July 13, 2007 08:23 PM (GMT)
Sadly not. Red is the standard banner colour. Maybe they could put the dragon in the background?

No, focus on motorsport in general. The magazine doesn't. They make it mainly F1 because that sells. How often out of the 51 issues per year have something other than F1 as the main feature?

Ha ha ha.... I know, I was taking the p*** a little,

no offence to any Welsh members... Someone joking said black... but that made me think... would they do that say when a British legend like Moss or Surtees dies...

Paul_Murtagh - July 14, 2007 06:28 AM (GMT)
I am not an avid reader of Autosport, but do buy it now and again. Can someone explain what the green and blue banner means? I have never noticed it before

ppparkinson9 - July 14, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
It's pretty simple whenever one of the following things happen you get a green banner:

British driver wins first F1 race
British driver wins first WRC round
British driver wins the World Drivers Championship
British driver wins the WRC
British driver wins the WTCC
British driver wins the Indy 500
British manufacturer wins Le Mans, (or their class at Le Mans as with Aston Martin this year)

Unless the driver is Scottish, in which case the banner is blue and not green.

safc_fan89 - July 14, 2007 09:36 AM (GMT)
Not a very rare occurrence then <roflmao> It still seems stupid.

Economic reality I'm afraid. If there were enough pure F1 fans around to support impartial coverage, we'd have it.

The Banner should be Green for such an occasion. Prehaps with the Welsh flag flying from the A though.

John - October 4, 2007 12:23 PM (GMT)
With Hamilton now under investigation and could possibly be handed a 10 place penalty on this weekends grid... maybe a 'Green' banner edition is a bit premature after all....

I guess it really isn't over until it's over... <think>
