Title: Mallory To Be Extended?
Description: Is It True?
Shadowman - July 27, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
I heard last weekend at Silverstone that Mallory Park is to be extended beyond Gerrards.
The original plan was to take the track up towards where the Moto X track is, but apparently that idea has been shelved.
Now it seems that the area beyond Gerrards corner may be used.
Anyone heard anything on this?
wickedwitch - July 27, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
Not a word.
If the rumour is true will they reconfigure the Pit Lane so I can be a pit marshal again? <grrr>
The STIG - July 27, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
I thought you were doing Startline now WW?
wickedwitch - July 30, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Well, yes, I'm hoping to, but it would be nice at least to have a pit lane!

When would they do this - over this "off" season [though not quite true with Mallory with the Boxing Day meeting etc!] or a later date?
Shadowman - August 10, 2007 08:52 PM (GMT)
Not sure and don't even know if the works are imminent or a while off yet.
I got the information from an Observer friend who is normally spot-on with stuff like this!
A part of me says leave Mallory alone.......it's good the way it is!

If one can overlook all the additions that have appeared for the benefit of the bikes <rolleyes>

Hopefully they'll just add to what they've got, and not replace it totally.
Pembrey's extension seems confirmed BTW, just a little unsure of timing.
Speedworx - August 17, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
Mallory should do up the oval so it can host SCSA and pick ups.
The STIG - August 17, 2007 08:25 PM (GMT)
it DOES host pick ups!
And SCSA, they can just learn how to turn right.

We did them years ago. They got binned after four marshals were injured in one incident.

I remember a V8 stock car going through the barriers on the Mallory mile (I'm guessing that it is about 8 years ago). It took nearly an hour to repair the damage.

it's not so much going through the barriers which was the problem...
more like going over them completly.

That was the incident I was referring to. My ex was one of the four marshals injured.
I have since seen a video of the incident and what happened was that something appeared to break on the car so instead of it turning left, it went straight on. It went through the gravel trap, without slowing down and hit the armco barrier, which promptly broke and acted as a launch pad. The car was doing around 100 mph upside down when it actually hit my ex. How he got away with no more severe injuries than two broken teeth and a bad headache for three weeks is beyond me.
Anyway, after that, it was decided that nothing else would run the wrong way round on the oval.

Why then, can they not run the right way around the oval instead?, In fact, why were they running the wrong way around it in the first place?

Because the set up would be all wrong. They have been mainly running anti clockwise, so to change them would be a job and a half!
They were running the wrong way round because they had always gone that way! It was an experiment that very nearly went badly wrong.
AndyW76 - August 22, 2007 09:37 AM (GMT)
I always thought that the stock car went anti-clockwize because that is the direction the american stock cars went in NASCAR.
I was actually at that meeting because a friend of mine sponsored a guy in the Legends. Now they were wacky vehicles. Also, that crash reminds me of when Bobby Alison took a chunk out of the spectator fencing at Talledega in 1987. That was an even more frightening accident.

Would this be the 'Eurocar' package ?
Weren't they left hand drive and the reason why they ran anti-clockwise ?
Did a few of them at Mallory and my mate had a fiery encounter with a couple who t-boned eachother at turn 4,which is Gerrads in if going the right way <think>

That's the one.
They were great fun to watch but, quite frankly, bloody dangerous. <yikes>
AndyW76 - August 23, 2007 10:05 AM (GMT)
The whole eurocar thing was launched to promote American style racing in the UK. The Legends didn't look too safe either, I wouldn't trust one of those in a barrel rolling accident.
