Title: Best BTCC Car - Ever!

The STIG - May 22, 2006 06:55 PM (GMT)
Ok, there's been a few, good bad and ugly, but which one was the best?

I vote for the Volvo 850Estate for the sheer madness of the thing!

GV Legend - May 22, 2006 06:57 PM (GMT)
Im gonna go with the obvious choice and say the blue and yellow renault megans of the mid 90's

lagunas, not meganes...

i'll pick the all conquering 1996 audi a4 quattro's. they are the epiteme of cool...

GV Legend - May 22, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
doh yeah silly me!

stradlin22 - May 22, 2006 07:32 PM (GMT)
Will Hoy's 1991 BMW M3

safc_fan89 - May 23, 2006 08:07 AM (GMT)
The 1994 Alfa Romeo looked good <thumbs>

Worst BTCC car ever must be any of the cars racing at the moment. Especially the Seat Leon, it looks stupid.

stradlin22 - May 23, 2006 08:48 AM (GMT)
the old Mazda Xedos looked pretty grim and the Nissan Primara's were very boring

the 93 Ecurie Ecosse vauxhalls looked quite smart

Will Hoy's 1991 BMW M3

I don't know if its that car, but there's certainly a SuperTourer spec BMW M3 in the Listerine/Omega livery doing selected races in the D&DMC and BARCNW Sports saloons championship. IIRC it had a big accident at Anglesey back in December, I'm looking forward to seeing if its been repaired and back out this year.

The STIG - May 23, 2006 11:40 AM (GMT)
I last saw that car at BTCC at Donington a couple of years back now, driven by Will's nephew. If it has had an accident, it's such a shame and I do hope they can repair it. It's not a pretty car, but what history!

Traveller - May 23, 2006 11:45 AM (GMT)
As I say, its certainly in the same livery, and is ST spec, but i don't know if it is that one. It rolled coming out of the last corner, and ended up hitting the pitwall upside down. The driver required some assistance in getting out, but was otherwise ok

I don't know the individual names of the cars, but the first Volvo was dreadful. Was there any point in that massive boot?

for picking up all the broken car parts that Jan Lammers and Rickard Rydell left around the track

FurCough - May 23, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
i liked the volvo estates i guess they must have had a bad translation and thought it was british towing car championship

The STIG - May 23, 2006 08:35 PM (GMT)
Actually, the estates were chosen because of the areodynamic benifits of having the longer roof...

FurCough - May 23, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
so why did they have towballs on

<blink>

If they did have towbars, they would have been in contravention of the technical regulations.

Traveller - May 23, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
have you read the SuperTouring regs, pretty much anything goes as long as you keep the shillouette(sp?)

and ive never seen a volvo estate without a towball

Traveller - May 23, 2006 09:34 PM (GMT)
no, me neither tbh, perhaps it costs extra to have them removed

The STIG - May 23, 2006 09:38 PM (GMT)
I've got a blue book downstairs. I could go and check it if you like?

Traveller - May 23, 2006 09:40 PM (GMT)
its far more likely to be in the technical regulations, but by all means check.

The STIG - May 23, 2006 09:45 PM (GMT)
Ok, I'll get back to you.

Traveller - May 23, 2006 09:46 PM (GMT)
to narrow your search, i suggest starting in section J

Yes already looking there.

The STIG - May 23, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
ah ha! Section J, 20.15.4. If fitted with a towing ball-hitch, have it removed while competeing.

Except if we are referring to BTCC their regs over-ride the Blue Book. I have just speed read the BTCC regs and can't find anything so I guess it's acceptable.

Shame we don't have anyone registered on here who is a scrutineer to clarify the position

Traveller - May 23, 2006 10:02 PM (GMT)
did you read the BTC regs, or the SuperTourer regs, i was referring to the latter

The STIG - May 23, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
Incidently, having seen what towbars do to road cars which hit them, it seems inconceviable that a racing series would allow their use...

Traveller - May 23, 2006 10:06 PM (GMT)
we're talking about the btcc here ;)

Lol...tow bars are an excellent addition...could be useful for snatching too!

Stiggy how the hell do you have a blue book?!

what year blue book are you reading it could be that after the extra aerodynamic downforce of the towballs was discovered on the volvos they wrote that into the blue book to stop them having an advantage

My Cheif Marshal at Pembrey gave it too me to check the address of a supplier. I give it back this weekend, so I thought I might as well make use of it.

the btcc did introduce a spec wing for the season after the estates introduction, because they couldn't change the mountings, they had to switch to the saloon. See, it was all a conspiracy ;)

True, but towballs don't really have much effect on areodynamics... I'll have to ask my mate who's an areodynamisist about that of course.
