I was watching the Hungarian GP in France and thought I would make a few points about their TF1(French television 1) F1's coverage.
Overall I didn't rate it any better than ITV's F1 coverage.
In the pre-race coverage there was a fair bit of content including some good pieces on the changes that a few of the teams made to their cars for the race. Also there were alot of interviews which is good but then here comes the bad point. All the interviews are done by a English speaker, you can here the responses in English but there is French being talked over it, its done so badly that the two cancel each other out and you can't understand a word that is being said. I couldn't quite make out the English and trying to understand the French was made even more difficult by the English. Also throughout the pre-race there was a fair bit of dribble being spoken but overall the time was filled quite well the but the problem that I mention above does ruin it somewhat.
Onto the race and the good thing is that there were only 3 small ad breaks that I counted. However the poor thing is the commentary, its the most dull commentary you are ever likely to hear in your entire life, its just two people talking dribble with not enthuasism or emotion and often what they are talking about has nothing to do with whats going on on the track For instance in the third stint when Raikkonen quickly gained 2 or 3 seconds on hamilton the commentators didn't pay hardly any attention to this.
The post race programme was ok but you so get the English-French clashing again.
Overall there are good points about the coverage like a decent variety of pre-race features, a better presenter than Steve Rider if you watch ITV and less and shorter ad breaks but like with ITV there are a few major flaws.
The other major problem is that TF1 don't show qualifying, you can only catch that if you have French Eurosport, if you have then its ok otherwise for a hardcore F1 fan its a major problem. If you don't have internet then you won't find out the order until 8.25pm on the French news at the earliest.
So I would have rate both sets of F1 coverage at a par but the fact that ITV at least shows qualifying as well puts it ahead for me. I am fairly comfortable watching both sets of coverage despite a few of the flaws which will always exist whatever sport coverage you watch.
