Title: Can you cook?
wickedwitch - May 26, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
I'm curious as to what people cook. Tonight's dinner was lemon chicken in a herb crust served with gratin dauphinoise and fresh steamed vegetables.
I admit to cheating on the dessert, which was bought!
I love cooking and I have several favourite recipe books. However, I tend not to stick to the written word but adapt to what I think works best in our house.
I tend to use guests as guinea pigs for new cordon bleu recipes, which can be a bit iffy to say the least!
I think my favourite menu for guests has to be the tried and tested tomato and basil soup with home baked bread, followed by Steak Bordelaise with Mediterranean Roast Root Vegetables and Strawberry and Cointreau Crush for pudding.
So, can you cook "proper" food and if so, what is your favourite recipe for a dinner party?

Doesn't matter what you do for a living! Cooking doesn't take much effort really.
For my part I find cooking very theraputic - especially when experimenting with new dishes and 'imself has clean up the mess I make! I have been known to use ever pot, pan and utensil we own to create a new receipe. Just as well we own a dishwasher!

Yes, I cook.
This year, I've found myself being more creative - in the first two years at Uni I "cooked" properly rarely, instead I bought something I put it in the oven, then boiled some potatoes and veg. More cooking than buying an expensive take-over; but not fantastic.
However, at the minute I'm ovenless, so use all my food to various things to stop just having something fried with sauce. As well as using cook books, I've got a few sauce packets. I'm sure it'll help me next year as well.

I can 'cook' toast. Does that count?
For as long as I live at home, my mum wouldn't let me near the oven, because I'd just make it explode or something.

Does that mean you use the sauce packet as part of the recipe? Or do you invent your own sauces based on what is contained in the packet?
What's a sauce packet? I make all my own sauces from scratch!

It's a packet with sauce :p
Seriously, it's powder that you add milk/water to, thus creating a nice sauce that is part of the recipe - such as for a casserole.
I can make my own sauce too, but when it's that easy not to....

Ahhhh but home made sauces are so much tastier - take tonight's for example. We had Valentine Pork Steaks, Garlic Sauteed Potatoes and fried apple slices with Cider cream sauce.
I made the sauce from a roux and added a cup of White Lightening Cider, a dash of lemon juice, three slices of apple and some double cream - yummy!
Perhaps I ought to start an on line cookery class?roflmao
Seriously, would anyone be interested?

You have a nice sounding recipe up to that point, why couldn't you add some proper cider as opposed to the stuff you find teenagers drinking at Bus Shelters?

Sorry Hon - but we actually like drinking that ! And it was all we had in the house!
I suppose I could have done Whisky pepper sauce but that wouldn't have gone down well with the fried apples!

Having been one on the Guinea Pigs of Auntie Sheilas cooking, I say how er... wonderful and varied the meals are when I go and nestle up on the bench after a day at Donington.
Today I prepped a bolognese sauce for the week. Tasty!
Have been known to create own pizzas and concoct the odd curry.
stradlin22 - May 27, 2006 10:59 PM (GMT)
i actually quite enjoy cooking
Chezza - May 28, 2006 09:05 AM (GMT)
Do I cook? Well I have been known to on occassion.
Being a student isn't an excuse for not cooking!
Ooooh Roast beef...I haven't had that for aaaaages!
safc_fan89 - May 28, 2006 09:39 AM (GMT)
We had a very nice roast beef on Thursday. My mum cooked it of course :)
Harvey - May 28, 2006 09:46 AM (GMT)
Hmmm, Beef!
Must get a joint so I can make a Beef Wellington at some point - yes I know it's "the summer" but it's a fine dish.
