Title: WTCC: Zanardi unhappy with penalty

Alessandro Zanardi has expressed his frustration at the penalty he has been handed after the first lap accident at Oschersleben two weeks ago.

Zanardi was given a 10-place grid penalty for the next four races, which he cannot appeal against, after officials decided that he was responsible for causing the multiple car accident in Germany.

However, the Italian has since reviewed the television footage of the accident himself, and he has also put still frames which he believes prove his innocence on his website.

Seems a bit of a harsh penalty, especially since it is not subject to appeal. I have no idea whether the collision was his fault or not, but in either case the penalty seems a bit over-the-top.

What actually happened? Though I would love to follow the WTCC I don't have Sky (refuse too) so cannot watch it.

I didn't see the race, but by all accounts the first-lap collision at Oschersleben was something of a biggie. Some amateur footage of the accident here but it's difficult to see what went on. Zanardi was blamed for this incident and has been penalised with a 10-place grid penalty for the next four races.

That sounds ridiculous, especially as the other driver involved dismissed it as a racing incident...

Whilst I agree with penalties being imposed for bad driving I find it totally unacceptable that there is no right of appeal in this case (or indeed any other case where a penalty has been imposed).
