Title: Colin McRae in helicopter crash

Norbert - September 15, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
This sounds a tad worrying - there's been a helicopter crash close to Colin McRae's house. Colin is apparently a keen 'copter-er, and police won't release any details about the accident other to say that there are no survivors and the wreckage is in such a state that at present they can't confirm how many people might have been on board. There'll be an announcement tomorrow......

<yikes>

Fingers crossed that it's not Colin or any of his family.

Red Andy - September 15, 2007 09:25 PM (GMT)
This article says that McRae was piloting the helicopter.

Tremendously sad news if it is true, although it is worth noting that no official announcement has been made by the police.

:(

THE former rally driving champion Colin McRae was killed and his five year-old son feared dead in a helicopter crash yesterday afternoon. The aircraft came down in Jerviswood, Lanarkshire, half a mile from the family's home and burst into flames just after 4pm.

Jean-Eric Freudiger, McRae's agent, said the 39-year-old driver had been piloting the helicopter himself. Also on board were believed to be his son Johnny, another adult and another child. Police said there were no survivors.

RIP Colin Mcrae

Shadowman - September 15, 2007 10:02 PM (GMT)
I'm totally shocked!

someone - September 15, 2007 10:13 PM (GMT)
The Times are reporting Colin McRae has died in a helicopter crash on his estate.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/mor...icle2461339.ece

Other websites [BBC News, The Telegraph, Autosport etc] are only reporting it's believed McRae has died.

RIP.

wickedwitch - September 15, 2007 10:23 PM (GMT)
HOLD ON a minute. Only the Times are running this.

Everyone else is saying the same as the Beeb. There will be NO identification today.

Norbert - September 15, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
For reasons I can't really talk much about, I'd not trust the Times and their accuracy. However, they appear to have spoken to his agent, so one can only assume that they've been given the right facts. (Or made them up!)

Shadowman - September 15, 2007 10:27 PM (GMT)
I'm still shocked!

Norbert - September 15, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
There's no point in speculating. Given the content of the Times article, it sounds like the worst scenario is likely, but it wouldn't be the first time a paper has cocked up. We'll find out tomorrow who the unfortunate victims were.

:(

Until then I'd like to stick my official hat on for a bit and suggest that it would be respectful to those who are likely to be involved if we didn't put too much effort into dissecting what is obviously an extremely unpleasant situation. A modicum of decorum would be appreciated.

safc_fan89 - September 15, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
No identification, but regardless of who was in the chopper it's sad news <no>

wickedwitch - September 15, 2007 11:08 PM (GMT)
Only the times are leading with this story.

I quoted the times on line as the article is quite lengthy and there is already an obituary.

Sky News is more than implying the story is correct also but not going as far as the Times did.

Nobert you are absolutely correct.

Everyone, please refrain from discussing this until we have more information.

The story is rinnign on other sites now

http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1483222007

Sadly this appears to be true.

someone - September 16, 2007 07:55 AM (GMT)
The Scotsman are also running with it this morning - http://news.scotsman.com/entertainment.cfm?id=1483222007

At the moment the local police are only reporting McRae is believed to have been onboard and they will release more details today [Sunday].

[mods hat on] Can I please remind people at this time not to speculate but if you do hear any further information, to include a source. Thanks.

Mrs Shrek - September 16, 2007 08:00 AM (GMT)
Sounds like it was a terrible crash, and a real tragedy, no matter who was on board. :(

fordprefect - September 16, 2007 08:16 AM (GMT)
This is terrible news no matter who was involved. We can only wait for more definite information.

Lex - September 16, 2007 08:30 AM (GMT)
The facts are, a helicopter has crashed, there are no survivors, it burst into flames making id of victims very difficult.

It is looking however, exceedingly ominous

:(

RIP Colin McRae, an incredibly talented driver and a very nice bloke. Will be sadly missed to say the least, this hurts...

On other forums they say he has been confirmed dead, but it was in German. Nobody would have gotten out a live with the flames, almost even sadder was that his 5 year old son was onboard as well. RIP Colin McRae and true legend of motorport and as a patriotic Scot was a true credit to our country.

Maybe it would be better if we leave the RIP's until it has definitely been confirmed that he was one of the dead.

I know it's looking pretty bad for him at the moment though. <cry>

someone - September 16, 2007 09:11 AM (GMT)
Just remember, whilst it looks like the worst and some places are running it as "confirmed," I don't believe there's been a police statement since last night.

The thread in Views on the News has been merged with this thread <thumbsup>

Morpun94 - September 16, 2007 09:16 AM (GMT)
My reading is, its McRae. If it wasnt woulndt he have come out and said something by now?3

someone - September 16, 2007 09:18 AM (GMT)
Morpun, I'm afraid that seems most likely from the various reports however it is still not confirmed.

wickedwitch - September 16, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
People, as there are several conflicting reports (some newspapers are saying that Colin is dead, whilst the TV stations are saying "it is feared that ....") I think that our speculating and people posting RIPs is a tad inappropriate until a formal statement has been made.

I hope you all understand and I would ask that no further RIPs are posted until a formal statement has been issued.

someone - September 16, 2007 11:07 AM (GMT)
It does not look like much, if any, further information will be available today [source - BBC - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgo...est/6997270.stm].

I echo what WW has said, posts will be edited without warning, and would ask everyone to be respectful at this time.

wickedwitch - September 16, 2007 11:27 AM (GMT)
The BBC news are saying that there will be an announcement "within an hour"

wickedwitch - September 16, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
Sky news are currently reporting.

I'm sorry to say that Colin was flying that helicopter. His 5 year old son was also on board.

My deepest sympathies to Colin's wife and family.

RIP.

RIP

a real family tragedy. Sympathies to his wife, and the relatives of the other victims on board. <cry>

fordprefect - September 16, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
This is terrible news. To lose Colin is sad news in itself but the fact that his son and others have been lost too is awful.

RIP Colin - our thoughts are with his family.

Morpun94 - September 16, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
Feel Sick. R.I.P. Colin.

someone - September 16, 2007 12:02 PM (GMT)
Sorry to say it's what most were expecting after the initial news, many reports have been commenting that McRae and his son were on board. I still don't believe formal identification / police statement has been released though.

RIP, thinking of his family at this time.

Formal statement was issued about half an hour ago. All four people on board the helicopter have now been named.

apologies, I'd checked BBC News before posting and was nothing, it's now been updated [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/6997270.stm].
