Autosport.com - Coulthard to pay homage to McRae

David Coulthard will pay homage to the late Colin McRae at this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix, wearing a helmet painted with the former World Rally Champion's colors.

McRae, who won the WRC title in 1995 with Subaru, was killed earlier this month in a helicopter crash.

Red Bull driver Coulthard, a friend of McRae's and his family, said he will also try to get the Formula One community to show its respects to the Scot.

"I will race with a helmet painted in Colin McRae's colours at the Japanese Grand Prix. I'm also hoping to get the other drivers to sign it and give it to the McRae family as a show of respect from Formula One", wrote Coulthard in his column for ITV-F1.

Nice show of support there from DC for his fellow Scot. I'm sure we will see other tributes from possibly the likes of Dario Franchitti and other drivers around the world

Makes me respect Coulthard even more.

Very nice gesture to a fellow Scot <bow>

As the most senior F1 driver (in terms of years and experience), this is a truely touching tribute.

Im reading DC's autobiography at the moment and despite following him for years its only now i understand what a generous and caring person he is. Bravo DC <bow>

That brought a lump to my throat. What a truly lovely gesture.

Coulthard is obviously not a true Scot. GIVE it away? If there is such a thing as another place, when David gets there I'm sure Colin will give him a ribbing for it!

<roflmao>

Why not have it signed and auction it for charity? I'm sure that they'll be setting up a Colin McRae foundation for underpriviledged up and coming rally drivers, so that would probably make a tidy sum to start it off......

Here's one for you. During a race, Coulthard has worn someone else's colours before, but whose, and why?

Schumacher lent him his helmet one race because his own was damaged or didn't fit or something <unsure>
Don't remember which race it was though <blink>

He has also worn Jenson Button's Helmet at the goodwood festival of speed.

Useless Trivia. David Coulthard takes a XL Helmet. Go to the donington collection and have a look!

Monaco 199something. DC had a misting problem, so MS lent him a spare lid as they use the same manufacturer. He taped over all the personal logos, obviously. I guess this was before the infamous Spa coming-together....

Wasn't aware DC had used Jenson's, but I guess it's appropriate seeing as neither have realised thier full potential, nor lived up to their own promises! Anyway, the FoS isn't actual racing as such, maybe I should have specified in a Grand Prix.

It was Monaco 1996 when the two drivers got on really well (in other words before Macca and the Scuderia were challenging for the title). Luckily for McLaren it wasn't as big a PR disaster as it should have been as both teams were then sponsored by Marlboro, and Schumi's helmet was covered in their logos. It was as close as Ron got to having Schumi drive for McLaren!
