Title: Getting to know you.
The STIG - October 4, 2007 12:27 PM (GMT)
We're Right nosy here at The Pit Lane. We do like to know a bit about our members so we can bring them the very best forum in the world. And to do that, we want to find out a little bit more about the best forum members in the world!
There's going to be a series of these little polls around the place, so keep an eye open for them. Call it the Pit Lane Survey 2007 if you like.
All poll answers are anonymous. if you do tick the Somewhere else button, you can submit your country to us via PM, and we won't tell anyone. Honest!
Thanks for helping out!
Lord Tau - October 4, 2007 12:58 PM (GMT)
I just discovered I am dual national. There's no provision for that!! :)
The STIG - October 4, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
Uh - Just put the country where you live down... So if you're actually an Azerbigani who permamently lives in Japan, put down Japan.
If however you are only visiting the country and don't live ther permamently, put down where you do permamently live.

The STIG - October 4, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
England is part of the UK. Same as Wales and Scotland. And Northern Ireland too, but I'll accept an answer of Ireland for that.
Norbert - October 4, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
UK is part of Europe, but I don't see that as an answer!
fordprefect - October 4, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
Cut it out now you two <fu>
Don't want this poll turning into a daft debate about Europe/ UK / England etc - there's other places for that!
Norbert - October 4, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
Are they not listed either?
<roflmao>

All we wanted to find out was whereabouts in the world people lived and it seemed easier to put the UK down rather than listing four additional options. I'm Welsh - but happily ticked the United Kingdom button in the poll because I live in the United Kingdom.
We never meant to offend anyone - we are just trying to tailor this board to suit it's worldwide membership.
It seems we can't start a simple poll without conflict though <doh>
wickedwitch - October 4, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
Like the majority of people on here I am happy to vote that I live in the UK. Perhaps we could do another poll to see which AREA of the UK our members come from. But that might prove a geographical nightmare. <yikes>
flood1 - October 5, 2007 01:20 AM (GMT)
Saying that I'm from the USA tells you many things about me, but telling an American that I'm from the USA, tells him nothing. But, my Southern drawl would tell him a few things about me.
I am interested in knowing where, specifically, people are from. Being from New Orleans is very different from being from Omaha, Nebraska. In India, Calcutta, Delhi, and Mumbai are very different places. Given the opportunity, I'd like to know more about people and their locales.
No poll could do this, but comments in the posts would.

Ok, I live near New Orleans, Louisiana USA. I am incredibly handsome, tall, and fabulously wealthy. I also have been accused of lying, occasionally.

I demand that in such a poll, Lancashire is listed separately! :P

I'm originally from the South Wales valleys but have been living in Hertfordshire for 15yrs now. I live in Hemel Hempstead, which is about 25 miles north of London.
Lord Tau - October 5, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
I've lived near Cambridge for 18 years, having moved there from the US where I was born.
Recently, I discovered that being born in the US automatically makes me a US citizen, and since my parents are both British, I am therefore a dual citizen.

| Recently, I discovered that being born in the US automatically makes me a US citizen, and since my parents are both British, I am therefore a dual citizen. |
My daughter has the opposite problem. She is born in Germany, but they don't recognise citizenship by birth, and as we are only here temporarily, she is not eligible to apply for it here. How ever because she was born overseas, she is also not an NZ citizen by default, and must apply for it. So at the moment, I'm not sure what she is officially.
The bureaucrats here are insisting that she brings her passport in to get her permission to stay here (she is only allowed 3 months in the country without an official permit, and that expires today) But her passport application can not be processed until NZ officially grants her NZ citizenship, which hasn't happened yet. <hitwall>
We've written a letter to tell the Germans that we'll bring in her passport as soon as it arrives. Let's just hope they aren't stupid enough to try and deport her in the meantime.... <yikes>

Well, apparently I've got to get me an American passport so I can enter the US. This involves a trip to the embassy in London, the completion of a scary looking form and an ominous sounding "passport interview".
Dual citizenship is complicated!!

Red tape eh? We had lots of fun trying to get a photo of a newborn with:
Eyes open, looking straight at the camera, head straight, both ears visible, mouth shut, neutral expression, no one else visible in photo, no shadow, correct lighting, head taking up 80% of photo, off white background.
We then had to find someone with a NZ passport over here who would sign the back of the photo to verify that they had known her for the last 12 months (luckily we had one set of long term NZ friends here who met my 'bump' when we first landed, and then again in the hospital so that they would be eligible to sign) She of course doesn't have an employer (once again who needed to have known her for a year) so the only other option available to us was the German doctor who did the delivery, and I wasn't quite that organised.

I'm from UK and live in Germany, so naturally in answer to the question, 'where are you from' I put UK (subdivision England, subdivision Lancashire, subdivision Colne)
