I'm fine with races which are processional

F1? :P

F1 is not that easy to lap chart

Reason? No numbers! Fortunatly the timing computers do it for you anyway, but still, in case of failure (and it has happened)

safc_fan89 - October 17, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
They DO have numbers, but it's all done electronically as you say.

The odd occassion where the timing system has failed the session or race has been red flagged.

The 2 recent occassions that spring to mind are quali 1 at the Nurburgring last season and the second red flag at Monaco in 2000, I don't know for sure that this was the reason for the red flag on those two occassions but suggestions are that they were.

If you want to be picky then... no VISIBLE numbers. (from the side)

Just out of interest, why is it important to log the numbers of the cars? Is it in case of penalties to be handed out and so on?

The STIG - October 17, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
It's important to know the numbers because they are quick, unmistakable, and easy to report anything over radios. Plus because manual lap charting takes place it's easier to put a number down fast than Spyker Red, or Spyker Green etc.

For example, if we get a McLaren off. in a certain predicament or whatever, we would have to report "Car Silver unknown, has (whatever it's done) at (wherever it's done it)". Where we could normally report "Car 1 silver has ... yadda yadda" which is much easier to understand particularly if you have interference on your radio.

I'm sorry but this year, F1 has quite visible numbers on all cars!

From www.formula1.com    In addition there are a number of requirements that apply to liveries for all cars and teams. Every car must carry its driver’s race number, which must be clearly visible from the front of the car, and the driver’s name must appear on the external bodywork of the car. The team’s name or emblem must also appear on the nose of the car.

The STIG - October 17, 2007 09:34 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but that's hopeless if you're viewing it from the side isn't it? Honda have the right idea.

Electronics can and DO fail and transponders DO fall off. Therefore it is important to have human back up on lap charts, if only to monitor who is in the lead!

I'm not talking specifically F1 here because I've never tried lap charting an F1 race.

For manual lap charting, numbers should be easily visible on the bonnet and on the front left and right sides of the car (perferably black on a white background and preferably unobscured by wings and such like protrusions).

Shadowman - October 18, 2007 06:56 AM (GMT)
I've definitely seen numbers on the side rear.

When, and on which cars?

Shadowman - October 18, 2007 11:34 AM (GMT)
On the Number 7 car Kev.......whoever drives that!

The STIG - October 18, 2007 12:09 PM (GMT)
yes, excluding the Hondas, how many other cars have visible side numbers?

mind you, if you think that's bad, what about A1GP where there are no numbers at all!

Shadowman - October 18, 2007 03:00 PM (GMT)
So It's just the Honda's?

I knew I'd seen 'em! <flirt>

Nice idea but have you any idea what it is like to try and even WRITE the numbers down in the correct order when a dozen or more midfield cars are all wanting the same piece of tarmac in front of the person who is lap charting? <yikes>
