It seems that the gearbox problems are related to an automatic electronic default that shifts to neutral, such as in a spin, to avoid stalling the engine. The cars only use clutch (neutral) in the pitbox.

This feature can be manually overidden, and I'm guessing that was the nature of the problem.

When he came in to make his first stop, I think he tested the clutch at the "speed limit" line in order to see if it was going to work for the stop. He was very slow at the line.
