Report in Autosport suggests that British F3 is going to join the British Touring car championship in 2009
Is this a good idea?
Fo the one thing - BTCC attracts a huge audience. Shame about the TV deal though. BF3 doesn't really have such a good following, owing in part to not being widely publicised or televised, so it could work well for F3 to perform in front of an almost gaurenteed big audiences.
But what does this mean for British GTs? if F3 disappears I'm sure the audience it has will go with it, leaving the premier sportscar racing series in the UK with small grids. it too doesn't have any real television coverage (C4 having long dropped it) and so tends to get ignored.
It's a good deal in terms of media exposure for F3 because it is very underrepresented in terms of media coverage, but like you say Stig it will have a knock-on effect for other series. Is the British GT series strong enough to continue as a stand-alone series?
