Title: Vettel to Team with Michael Schumacher at ROC
Description: Race of Champions

Formula One’s youngest new star Sebastian Vettel is teaming up with seven-time F1 Champion Michael Schumacher for The Race of Champions (ROC) when it takes over Wembley Stadium later this year.
The Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie, who amazed the F1 paddock by finishing fourth in the recent Chinese Grand Prix, is a big ROC fan and cannot wait to compete in front of an expected 80,000 racing fans at Wembley this December.
"I have always watched The Race of Champions on TV every year and dreamed about participating one day," said the 20-year-old, who was just four-years-old when his ROC team-mate Schumacher made his F1 debut in 1991. "It’s fantastic to be invited; I’m so happy. To represent Team Germany together with Michael Schumacher is a great honour."
Wembley will be transformed into a race track using 1,800 tonnes of tarmac for the 16 December event, allowing 18 star drivers to compete head-to-head in a series of knockout heats to determine the "Champion of Champions."
There are two competitions: The Race of Champions, where drivers compete for individual glory, and The Nations Cup, where drivers partner-up to compete for their home country. |

Good news for Vettel then.
Any idea who is to be teamed with DC? I know it was originally planned to be Wee Colin. :(

I've just purchased a ticket. Couldn't get the cheapest ones so have splashed out on the £35 ticket. Which incidentally is more than it will cost me to travel down to London by train. Hopefully it will be good because I've never been to a motorsport event before!!!!

Have a good time SAFC, it should be fun!

Oooh that is reasonable.
I love watching it on the telly and I'm really jealous that you are going. Should be good fun - enjoy! But remember, it's not a PROPER race event per se. It's more of a show but good fun to watch nonetheless.
Don't forget to take your Pit Lane banner - we'll give you extra points if you get it shown on the telly! <thumbsup>

Well you know what I mean ;) it is motorsport though!

Have fun, Chris!
Also shocked that you've never been to a motorsport event before....although if you're anything like me, you'll make plans every year to go to the British GP before realising how thoroughly inaccessible and expensive it all is. My recommendation is to try motorsports besides F1 - even if you're not into them when you arrive, by the time you leave you will be.

Why so surprised Norbert?

I second this.

Give us a shout if you wanna meet up safc! I desperately hope you enjoy it. I love live motorsport more than anything else in life (much to my girlfriend's contant despair), I'm sure you'll love it!

I've always had football to go to (went to over 150 Sunderland matches). I've only really become more interested in motorsport in the last 3 years or so. Before that it was just a side interest.
The STIG - November 4, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
Suggestion : Try Croft on Tees, Rallycross, for an action packed day out (sometimes as many as 60 races in a day)
safc_fan89 - November 4, 2007 10:57 PM (GMT)
I've joined the motorsport society here. They do days out to Croft apparently, I'll go on any that they advertise.

Chris, Croft is on your doorstep.
They host BTCC, F3 and numerous club meetings. It's a grand little circuit and you have no excuse not to go.
Start saving NOW and make at least one New Year's Resolution to attend a live race meeting at your LOCAL TRACK!
I may even agree to staying at my mother's house in order to meet up with you at Croft <roflmao>

Trying to scare me into action? <roflmao>

It'll take you less than a week to save teh cost of a ticket to a club race or rallycross (circa £10)
Oh and if WW really wants to scare you, she wouldn't do it like that...

I was hoping to go to some events this Summer but due to all the crap with my move to France and then it being called off due to the stupid buyers pulling out at the last minute I haven't had the time.
I was going to go to the Renault weekend but I didn't because I was ment to start packing that weekend but it got cancelled the day before so I could have gone. <grrr>
The race of champions sounds like a decent event and its on a Saturday afternoon so its perfectly feasible for me to attend, I might book a couple of tickets myself, I am sure I can get a friend or my Dad to come with me.
I will go to the British GP or French GP depending on which country I am living in when the time comes and my Dad is trying to arrange for us to fly to Germany for the Hockenheim race there where he has customers that we could stay with.
I am really looking forward to going to Le Mans on a regular basis when I move, I hope its sooner rather than later, the house seems to have no chance of selling at the moment. :(

Just out of interest, how come it is at Wembley this year? And where will it be held in future years?
The STIG - November 6, 2007 12:46 PM (GMT)
It's at Wembley this year because the organisers wanted a bigger stadium to be more adventurous with the track and more spectators. It's likely to stay at Wembley for at least another 2 years.

It's at Wembley because at the time the venue was announced, it was reckoned that Wembley would probably still resemble a rallycross track anyway....<devil>

Not bad so far this year.
Germany beat England but with it being Wembley that's not a surprise.
But the highlight so far has been Michael Schumacher stalling and falling a lap behind and having Heikki Kovalienen running right behind him for a lap until a brilliant pass into the first turn! <blink>

Shame the marketing people can't lay off though and let all the drivers drive all the types of cars. I would have liked to see Schumacher in a WRC and I bet he would have liked a go too.

Whilst such an event would be great (and there's precident for it too, more later), It would take much longer with the number of drivers competing in the event.
Ah, the precident. there used to be rallysprint specials at Silverstone and Cardiff, where there would be a selection of cars and a mix of pro and amateur [invariably celebrity] drivers. The idea was that all the drivers would have a go in all the machines and drive for points - but it got too confusing.
ppparkinson9 - December 16, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
No, what I'm saying is that some of the drivers can't use some of the cars due to contract rubbish, it wouldn't actually take any longer. Schumacher did use the FIAT rally car of course.
Andy - December 16, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
I only can hope that the women team handball worldchampionship final does not go into overtime.... coz if it does eurosport won't show anything from the roc until the final has ended

It's all bunk, you know. I mean what are they going to do if someone drives something that their contracts say they can't? Sack them? i thinky not.
